Leadership Article September 10, 2007

I read an article titled: Incremental Innovations: Changing the Culture of Teaching and Learning by Ernst Mohr. It discusses the notion of change and shifting the paradigm of “traditional styles” of teaching to incorporate more technology and new learning environments. This article made an interesting analogy to the parable of the boiled frog.
A frog exposed to water that is too hot to live in will quickly jump out of the water. Yet, if a frog if the frog is put
into cold water and the water is warmed slowly, the frog will stay in so long that by the time it realizes the
circumstances have changed, it is unable to act
I found this to be an interesting way to view change. Throughout this program we have read numerous articles wit people who support change, and those who reject it. We have also had numerous discussions regarding buy-in to new theories and uses of technology from our students, fellow teachers, administrators, and other members of the school community, this particular group from the University of St. Gallen was interested in integrating technology-supported self-studies as a new method, but also to pursue new goals: to assist their students in developing competencies for life-long learning. They found that they needed to take it slowly in “little steps” in order to get buy in fro multiple stakeholders.
I really connected to this article, and really liked the process they went through in order to be successful in their implementation of a new way of receiving and delivering education. I decided to attach the article to this post, so you can see how this community instituted change, and was successful.

I chose to read the article A History of Instructional Design and Technology: Part 1: A History of Instructional Media by Robert A Reiser. I found this article to be very informative. I found it interesting that mesums were labeled as the first resource to implement “visual instruction”. I guess I never thought of mesuems as being in the same category as a technological advance in technology. I also found it to be very interesting that the motion picture projector was the first technological device to be used in the classroom. I guess when I think about how much technology has grown within the last 23 years it is pretty amazing. I remember projectors that had the movie placed into seperate frames on actual film that wound around a metal reel. I also found it interesting that Reiser, when describing the history of technology, that Thomas Edison was onto something by uing visual materials and standardized materials to train large parts of our military. I found it interesting that our military was very sucessful, yet Edison never made the possible connection between the materials he was using to train the military and their sucess.
